The way organisations, leaders and the media respond to a tragedy will impact professionals, the sector and public reaction. Practitioners on the ground are still required to continue generating high quality outcomes in reviews and service delivery in the weeks and months to follow. Alongside processing all the emotions they feel after the tragedy.
What happens when the legitimate aim of preserving confidentiality is perceived as secrecy and how can those involved influence that? It is engaging for readers to observe the drive to hold individuals to account, but there are long lasting negative impacts. Stories and commentaries which distort perception of reviews and inspections and what they aim to do create their own difficulties. Each of us has a role to play in how far public confidence plummets in reviews and in the safeguarding community in these situations. Do the stories impact positively on policy development or do they purely generate public discontent?
