Darlington Community Safety Partnership

Darlington Community Safety Partnership seek an independent reviewer for a Domestic Homicide Review.

On Wednesday 18th of September 2024, a local authority officer conducted a welfare check at an address in Darlington because the occupant had not been seen for approximately seven days and had failed to respond to any attempts made by the service to contact them. The officer gained entry and upon searching the home, they found the occupant deceased in a room upstairs.

The deceased had vomit down their face coming from their mouth. There was vomit on the bathroom floor, empty alcohol bottles next to the bed and opened medication.

The front door had been locked, and a key was in the lock of the back door with undisturbed rubbish behind it.

Police, CSI and FME attended the address along with the Ambulance service.

The deceased had been the victim of an attempted murder in 2023 where they sustained multiple knife injuries about their body that had been caused by their partner who was subsequently charged with the offence.

The deceased was a known alcoholic, was prescribed medication for a history of mental health episodes and had made previous attempts to take their own life. The deceased was a recluse and would receive weekly visits from agencies to assist them as part of an ongoing care package however it is suspected that they were not taking place in a timely manner.

It is suggested that the deceased’s mental health deteriorated significantly as a direct result of the attempted murder.
